June 19, 2022 – Firenze

Woke up this morning slowly. I finally go up around 8:30ish. We ate breakfast at the flat again and started more laundry. The machine is so small and it takes so long we have to do laundry daily.

Found on the streets are the trash and recycle stations. We took our trash out and a lot of water and wine bottles. It was very interesting set up and there are very frequent I am sure it depends on the number of people living in the area.

Then Aly, Kelle and I headed off to Cuoieria Florentina to look at purses. Brandon and the girls stayed back at the Flat. It was about a 30-40 minute walk to get to the purse store. Once we arrived we looked around at all of the options. I found a purse I liked, but was not sure about the orange. Aly asked and the woman was able to find it in black for me.

This doesn’t show, but it is more of a mustard yellow. It was 50% off.

After the purse store we decided to walk by the Duomo since we were only a few blocks away. It is so amazing. We walked around it, but didn’t pay to go inside as we walked all the way around there are tons so places to eat and stores. I spotted a Pandora store so we stopped in there so I could get some charms.

Firenze Cathedral
Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore is the 3rd largest church in the world.
Giotto’s Bell Tower. It is 84.7 meters tall and was built in the 14th century. Construction began in 1334. Giotto died in 1337 and had only completed the first part of his bell tower.
View from Ponte all Carraia you can see Chiesa di San Frediano in Castello

Then we headed back since it was getting close to lunch time. We decided to just stop and get some food from the grocery store since the Ware’s needed to leave for the train in an hour. We picked up a few ready made salads for the girls and different cheeses and lunchmeat for the rest of us. The we found some chips and bread. We did the self check out which was very interesting.  5 cents for plastic bags which you grabbed before you checked out. Then once you have finished and paid you scan your receipt to get out of the self check out area.

Once at the Flat we pulled out the food to have lunch and relax a little. The Wares left to go catch their train. We relaxed for a little longer before heading off to Pittia Palace. We are about a 30 minute walk from pretty much everything. Luckily we were able to find shade most of our way to the palace. When we were buying tickets the man selling tickets so that the Palace had AC. Which is true, but those rooms are so large and those AC units are so some rooms were warmer than others.

The Palazzo Pitti, a mainly Renaissance, palace in Florence, Italy. Near the Ponte Vecchio. The core of the present palazzo dates from 1458 and was originally the town residence of Luca Pitti, an ambitious Florentine banker. The palace was bought by the Medici family in 1549 and became the chief residence of the ruling families of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

There were some pretty views of the city from inside the Palace.
I’m the courtyard area the was a cool fountain area under the stairs leading out to the garden. It was so hot we decided not to do the garden tour.
Looking back towards the front entrance of the palace.

After we finished with the palace we headed towards the Duomo. Jennah found a hat she had looked at in Pisa, but was able to find one the fit better here. Then we walked across Ponte Vecchio and looked at what shops were opens. Lots of jewelry stores. Once we got to the Duomo we walked around and had the girls look at the outside as we found the place we wanted to stop at for dinner.

Limoncello Spritz while looking at the Duomo.
Gnocchi with pomodoro sauce
Jennah went with the cacio e Pepe
Baptistery of San Giovanni. The South Door, cast by sculptor Andrea Pisano between 1330 and 1336.
Bella asked to stop by the Lego store. We saw the colosseum and a Vespa. Way too big for the suitcase. The girls ended up making 3 lego guys.
We stopped and let Jennah ride on the carousel 🎠
Caffe and Tiramisu gelato. We found this place on the other side of the Ponte closer to our Flat. It was 1€ cheaper than the place we had last night. But we were about a 15 minute walk away from the big tourist area. It was still busy there. When we walked out there were at least 10 people waiting to get in and there was no line when we arrived. Then it was about a 15 minute walk back to the Flat. A good middle stopping point for Gelato. I let the girls lead us home once we made the right turn (it was pretty much a straight shot) trying to working making sure they are aware and know how to get places and look for familiar things.
